25 Years & Counting!

Our Chapter was founded in 1985 under our organizer Willis Wolfe’s leadership.  A few of those original members are still part of our Chapter. Twenty-five years later, I am thrilled with the resilience of our Chapter in spite of our long distance membership. We have done a terrific job in getting member and guest participation at our Chapter events since June 2009: 27 members and guests in attendance at our September 21, 2009 Santa Barbara dinner meeting, 19 at our November 5, 2009 Camarillo dinner meeting, over 80 attendees at our one-day Fall Seminar on December 3, as well as 20 at our February 3, 2010 Camarillo dinner meeting.

Save the Date for our Spring Seminar April 13

One-day event at a TERRIFIC value for your $$$!!!  It will again be at the Courtyard Marriott, 600 E. Esplanade Dr., Oxnard, CA from 7:15 AM – 5:00 PM. While Denise Kendall has done a terrific job in negotiating excellent values for our dollars again this time, our attendance costs will be higher in order to pay the fee for our ‘special guest speaker’ - Ray The D*I*C*E Man Semko.  We have also confirmed Thomas Mauriello, former head of IOSS, and Jeffrey Boick, Defense Security Service Counterintelligence Specialist as our speakers. We plan to hold a short Chapter business meeting immediately following the seminar.  To download a copy of our flier in MS Word format, click here.

Chapter Meeting June 15 in Reno

We will hold a 20-minute Chapter meeting at the NCMS Training Seminar in Reno, NV on Tuesday, June 15 immediately following the Workshops and prior to the President’s Dinner. I will arrange for use of a room with Sharon Tannahill and will let everyone know. This will be an idea and planning meeting for another Fall Seminar in November. Since we missed a great opportunity to do a photo with so many of our members last June in Anaheim, I would like to plan a group attendee photo at the Seminar in Reno.  Time and place TBD.

If you have any questions on any of the items above, please don’t hesitate to contact me at pelton@sonatech.com or 805.690.5431.

Dinner Meetings Sites

Those in Santa Barbara and Vandenberg, keep the faith.  I would like to hold a dinner meeting in our area in August or September.  We need some speaker suggestions and an ADA compatible facility to host the event.

CONGRATULATIONS TO NEW MEMBERS

Our Membership Drive for the December 3, 2009 Seminar was very successful with several new members signing up. The Chapter had a cumulative 16% increase in membership for 2009. So far in 2010 we’ve already added 4 new members so let’s keep up that trend by telling a security friend or associate about the benefits of NCMS membership.

Also, since attending our Dec. 3 seminar, I’m hopeful that the local and Pasadena Defense Security Service Representatives will continue to publicize our upcoming events to their secure facilities.

 Poster Competition

So far I haven’t had any inquiries on the Poster or Media Competition.  This is the time to be giving is serious thought.  Submittals are also a criteria in our endeavors to achieve a Chapter of Excellence Award at the National Training Seminar.

Last June was the first time since 2002 that the Channel Islands Chapter did not have a poster in the NCMS Annual Poster Contest. This contest is held in conjunction with the Annual Training Seminar. The deadline for submissions for 2010’s competition is early May, so let’s all put our imaginations to work to create up to four New Designs and consider using a poster you’ve previously created and already used in your Security Education program. Those would be in the Contemporaneous category and we’re also allowed to submit four entries.

There is also a multi-media category that in the past has had PowerPoint slide shows for briefings or security games, etc. for consideration in the competition. However, you must furnish the laptop so the media presentation runs during the voting periods. You’ll want to do so with a cable and lock mechanism to be certain the hardware doesn’t drift away.

If you have ideas for posters and don’t have the graphic support you need, I’m sure we can get assistance from other members.  Let me know at pelton@sonatech.com as soon as you’ve got some
